His Story
My wife asked me to write something about WoW and why I quit playing so here we go. I first stopped playing simply because I was swamped at grad school. I was prepping for my thesis proposal and needed to really put my nose to the grindstone. I intended to take only a month off from the game and then get back. After all, I had raids to go on, and dwarves to slay. However, during that month, I noticed that my life improved a great deal. First, the wife wasn’t annoyed with me all the time and that led to a big improvement in our love life (read: a lot more sex). I also had time to do things I enjoyed other than playing WoW. I read more books (likely dorky ones), saw more movies (yep those were dorky too), and exercised more. I was also much more productive at work since I wasn’t thinking about WoW constantly.
Fast forward a bit over a year. I haven’t played WoW since. My relationship with Alison is great, I’ve lost 30 pounds (which also equals more sex, I think we are seeing a theme) and I’m in position to finish my Ph.D. in the next year. I play video games still but nothing with a massively online component. I still miss World of Warcraft occasionally; I had a lot of fun there and met some great guys. Ultimately, it was about priorities. Alison means more to me than any video game and I’m glad that I can show her that now.
